Bitcoin - The Currency of the Internet
A community dedicated to Bitcoin, the currency of the Internet. Bitcoin is a distributed, worldwide, decentralized digital money. Bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. You might be interested in Bitcoin if you like cryptography, distributed peer-to-peer systems, or economics. A large percentage of Bitcoin enthusiasts are libertarians, though people of all political philosophies are welcome.
a bitcoin wallet software that is TRULY annonymous
bitcoin's main intention was to remove banks, in other words, a central authority, but now in order to use bitcoin main net to send and receive transactions we have to use wallet providers that store private keys in their database, again meaning they would be the central authority which is the opposite of what we want. as I have understood so far in order to be truly anonymous while using bitcoin you have to use bitcoin core which requires you to download the whole ledger which is not good if you only want to spend some bitcoins. I wanted to know if I have misunderstood this or not? if not then why didn't the bitcoin community create a lite version of bitcoin core just for transaction purposes?
What's to stop rogue programmers inserting malicious code into Bitcoin wallet software?
Would it be possible for a programmer or group of programmers to hide malicious code in the source of a popular wallet, which could lie dormant for months while users adopt it, then conduct a sudden heist and disappear with the proceeds forever? I have no idea on the feasibility of a scheme like this, but it makes me nervous. The rogue programmer scenario seems particularly relevant to open-source clients. Can anyone enlighten me about whether this is a legitimate concern and how it's mitigated?
Please help me find a certain bitcoin wallet software, I found an old recovery phrase
Hi /bitcoin, I'm cleaning and recently stumbled upon the piece of paper which I believe has my bitcoin wallet recovery phrase. I remember forgetting about bitcoin a long time ago and losing my wallet. I know every software is different for generating recovery phrases. I remember my wallet was running on a Linux system. The recovery phrase is of the form: xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx Where the x's are letters and numbers. Please help me find the software with this as the recovery phrase format. I think I had a little bit in the wallet, which today, no doubt, would not be a lot but still definitely more than a while back. Thanks!
Safety of open source Bitcoin wallet software/apps
Open source software are considered safe/safer because the source code can be audited/reviewed. This thread is not about the source code, but the potential risk caused by the compilation process, or in other words, the possibility that the software/apps aren't complied from the claimed source code. Here is a link about some version of TrueCrypt's Windows executable being suspicious: https://blog.cryptographyengineering.com/2013/10/14/lets-audit-truecrypt/
[T]he Windows version of TrueCrypt 7.0a deviates from the Linux version in that it fills the last 65,024 bytes of the header with random values whereas the Linux version fills this with encrypted zero bytes. From the point of view of a security analysis the behavior of the Windows version is problematic. By an analysis of the decrypted header data it can’t be distinguished whether these are indeed random values or a second encryption of the master and XTR key with a back door password. From the analysis of the source we could preclude that this is a back door… As it can’t be ruled out that the published Windows executable of Truecrypt 7.0a is compiled from a different source code than the code published in “TrueCrypt_7.0a_Source.zip” we however can’t preclude that the binary Windows package uses the header bytes after the key for a back door.
Does any Bitcoin wallet software currently have an accurate fee estimator that accounts for Segwit discount?
I see this as one of the primary problems driving unnecessarily high transaction fees on Bitcoin transactions right now:
Some software wallets use use utterly outdated hard-coded "fixed fees" that don't account for current market, causing their users to end up with transactions stuck that never confirm.
Many other software wallets use absolutely terrible fee estimator algorithms that cause their overs to overpay by large amount.
Many wallets do not let users easily see their transaction size in KB, or more importantly, block weight, making it difficult to manually estimate fees yourself.
To the best of my knowledge, no current Bitcoin wallet software takes Segwit reduced block weight into account when estimating fees. This causes users to think that there is no transaction fee benefit to Segwit.
I for one would happily pay $ for a solid and professional Bitcoin wallet software with TrezoLedger support, the ability to point at a specific trusted Full Node (ie, my own), and most importantly: a carefully tuned and aggressive transaction fee estimator that takes Segwit block weight properly into account. I imagine a lot of other people would be happy to pay for this as well, and once word got out that "this Bitcoin wallet gets you lower fees!" I can imagine it would sell quite nicely. Even over in BCash /btc land, they're talking about the same issue and acknowledge that the fee situation on Bitcoin is primarily driven by caused by people's ignorance of appropriate fee calculation and bad fee estimators. If anyone is aware of any existing software wallet that has a good working fee estimator which accounts for Segwit block weight reduction, please post here and let us all know!
